If it is not clear already, I really enjoy the podcast interview format. That includes being the one asking the questions and being the person on the other side of the microphone. In the latter case, I never see any of the questions in advance so there is literally no way to know what I am going to be asked about. That makes the interview both fun and challenging at the same time. Yes, I enjoy talking about Cove Street, our investment process, and how we approach the world a little differently from a lot of investors. But, I also think the medium helps me become a better communicator and sometimes helps to clarify my own thoughts. Specifically, when someone asks you a question about something that you hadn’t actively thought deeply about, the back and forth can bring out insights that you weren’t consciously aware of.
With all of that as background, I had the chance to appear on the BABY Investments podcast. The host is a guy named Antonio Atanasov and we had a very engaging discussion about:
- Distinguishing the signal from the noise in the investment industry
- The issues associated with investing in commodity and natural resource companies
- The categories of companies that are underappreciated and misunderstood in the current market environment
- Some of the major takeaways and lessons from the first episodes of the Compounders podcast
