Amazon has launched a decarbonization investment fund worth $2bn, financed entirely from its balance sheet. As such, says Matt Peterson of Amazon, investments need not meet any internal rates of return. “The focus is on decarbonization, which is a strategic need for Amazon,” he explains. Success will be measured by how much investments reduce Amazon’s carbon footprint.
Now, Amazon is such that a few billion here or there really does NOT add up to much. And, Amazon has a record of nosing here and there and then we wake up and there is a few hundred billion of value created. But we more than speculate that there is simply a ton of money wallowing around in aspirational narcissism and to be a net seller to the world that does not need a return or a buyer of things that they disdain no matter what the return…seems like a place to look.
